What is exhaust ceramic coating?

A thin-film ceramic that manages heat and protects your exhaust

Exhaust ceramic coating is a thin-film thermal-barrier coating bonded to the surface of your exhaust components. Unlike exhaust wrap, which is a thick fabric barrier wound around the outside of the pipe, ceramic coating is applied as a thin, durable layer that becomes part of the surface itself.

Applied externally it minimises the heat radiated from the exhaust into the engine bay; applied internally, a hard, smooth ceramic helps speed the evacuation of exhaust gas while reducing heat loss through the pipe walls. We can coat the inside, the outside, or both, and tailor a specification to best fit your needs. Our ceramic products are supplied by the specialist coatings manufacturer Tech Line Coatings.

The benefits

Why ceramic coat your exhaust

Effective thermal barrier

Keeps heat inside the exhaust where it belongs, helping the system work as it should.

Lower under-bonnet temps

Reduces radiated heat, helping protect starter motors, alternators and wiring nearby.

Corrosion & bluing protection

Protects against corrosion, oxidation and the rusty, stained look exhausts develop over time.

Clean, durable finish

A hard-wearing finish that resists the discolouration stainless suffers as it begins to blue.

The coating is designed to manage heat and protect components. Where you have read big horsepower figures elsewhere, we prefer to talk honestly about what the coating reliably delivers: managed heat, protected components and a finish that lasts.

Internal & external

Coated inside, outside, or both

One thing we offer that not every coater does is a specialist internal and external ceramic coating service for exhaust systems.

External coating

Reduces the heat radiated into your engine bay and gives a clean, hard-wearing finish.

Internal coating

Applies a hard, smooth ceramic to the inside of the pipe (assuming no catalytic converters), helping speed the evacuation of exhaust gas and reducing heat loss through the walls.

Both surfaces

Coating both gives the most complete result — from a road-car downpipe done inside and out to a full race treatment.

Finishes & coatings

From hard-wearing matt to a chrome-like shine

As an applicator of Tech Line Coatings, we apply a range of ceramic coatings, each suited to different temperatures, finishes and uses.

CermaKrome is a water-based metallic ceramic coating that is mechanically polished to an almost chrome-like finish — an excellent choice where appearance and corrosion resistance both matter. Alongside it we offer coloured ceramic finishes and high-heat base and clear coats. Because the right specification depends on your exhaust, its operating temperatures and the look you want, we will recommend the best option, with its temperature rating, when you get in touch.

What we coat

Parts and exhaust systems we coat

Manifolds & headers Downpipes, collectors & link pipes Turbo housings & manifolds Silencers, tailpipes & tips Complete systems, inside & out

We work across a wide range of substrates and applications, from single enthusiast parts to complete motorsport systems. For aluminium parts needing a hard-wearing, low-friction coloured finish, our Diamondyze ceramic anodising process can be used alongside Camcoat ceramic coatings. If you are unsure whether your part is suitable, contact us and we will advise.

FAQs

Exhaust ceramic coating questions

What is exhaust ceramic coating and what does it do?
A thin-film thermal-barrier coating bonded to your exhaust components. It keeps heat inside the pipe while reducing the heat radiated into the engine bay, and protects the metal against corrosion and the rusty, stained look exhausts develop over time. Our ceramic products are supplied by Tech Line Coatings.
Does exhaust ceramic coating actually work?
Yes. The coating works as an effective thermal barrier, keeping heat inside the exhaust and reducing under-bonnet temperatures, which helps protect nearby starter motors, alternators and electrical wiring. We are honest about what it reliably delivers: managed heat, protected components and a durable, clean finish, rather than overstated power claims.
Ceramic coating vs exhaust wrap — which is better?
Exhaust wrap is a thick fabric barrier wound around the pipe; it is cheap and DIY-friendly but can trap moisture and degrade over time. Ceramic coating is a thin, durable layer bonded to the surface itself, giving a clean appearance, strong corrosion resistance and a long-lasting finish, and it can be applied inside and out. For a durable, professional result, ceramic coating is the better long-term choice.
What temperature can exhaust ceramic coating withstand?
It depends on the coating. Different Tech Line ceramic coatings carry different temperature ratings, with some suited to road use and others to track and race applications. We will recommend the correct coating, and confirm its temperature rating, when you get in touch.
How long does it last and will it discolour?
Longevity depends on the correct high-temperature formulation and proper surface preparation. Quality ceramic coatings are designed to resist corrosion and discolouration, helping avoid the heat-tint discolouration untreated stainless can show at sustained high temperatures. Proper preparation is key, which is why we discuss the right specification with you before we start.
Can you coat a manifold, headers, downpipe or turbo housing?
Yes. We coat manifolds and headers, downpipes, collectors and link pipes, turbo housings and turbo manifolds, silencers, tailpipes and tips, and complete exhaust systems. If you are unsure whether your specific part can be coated, contact us and we will advise.
Can you coat the inside as well as the outside?
Yes. We are a specialist internal and external ceramic coater of exhaust systems. External coating reduces radiated heat into the engine bay; internal coating applies a hard, smooth ceramic that helps speed the evacuation of exhaust gas and reduces heat loss through the walls. Coating both gives the most complete result.
Does ceramic coating an exhaust add horsepower?
The proven, dependable benefit is heat management and component protection, not big power figures. By keeping heat inside the pipe and lowering under-bonnet temperatures, the coating supports a cooler, better-protected engine bay. We prefer to be straightforward about this rather than promise specific power gains.
Where can I get my exhaust ceramic coated near me?
Camcoat has two depots: Warrington (129 Hoyle Street, WA5 0LP, 01925 445003) and Poynton (Unit 4a, Adlington Industrial Estate, SK10 4NL, 01625 858547). We serve Cheshire, Greater Manchester and the wider North West, and you can send parts by courier from anywhere in the UK.
