What we do

Thin film coatings that manage heat, friction and corrosion

A performance coating is a thin, bonded layer applied to a component to change how it behaves in service, rather than simply how it looks. Applied correctly it keeps heat where you want it, protects the metal underneath, and helps parts last longer.

We apply a range of internal and external ceramics and powder coatings for industrial, commercial and automotive applications. Our ceramic products are supplied by the specialist coatings manufacturer Tech Line Coatings, and are designed to improve the life of parts, increase running efficiencies and manage heat, which benefits both performance and the environment.

Whether you are running a road car, building a race engine, restoring a classic or finishing an industrial component, we specify the coating around the job rather than selling a single product.

Two coating levels, specified around what you need

Most exhaust work comes down to a choice between maximum thermal management and maximum durability. These are our two flagship specifications.

Race-Spec

Maximum heat insulation

By employing three of our ceramic heat barriers, we implement an internal layer, an external base ceramic layer, and Black Satin topcoats. This combination represents our most effective product lineup for heat insulation.

  • Internal ceramic layer, external base ceramic and Black Satin topcoat
  • Cast iron manifolds take a double internal coat to slow heat absorption into the substrate
  • Our strongest specification where thermal management is the priority
Cool-Spec

Maximum longevity

An internal ceramic heat barrier finished externally with a burnished and polished MCX (CermaKrome) silver finish. A strong contender for minimising radiated heat, and our hardest wearing coating.

  • MCX is a cermet, a ceramic metallic material, making it exceptionally durable
  • Salt spray testing (ASTM B117) was stopped after 6,500 hours with no failure
  • Our highest standard for durability, frequently used in demanding marine conditions

Colours and finishes

From OEM style satins to a polished chrome-like shine

Alongside the flagship specifications we offer a range of coloured ceramic finishes. These coatings provide excellent temperature resistance and effective insulation properties, and are matt or satin in finish.

They deliver OEM-like aesthetics and can mimic new base substrates for sympathetic restoration projects. These polymer ceramics can be applied directly to metal surfaces, or over a base ceramic where thermal management is also needed. Red, orange and blue coatings are offered for low temperature applications.

You can drop parts in at either depot, or send them by courier from anywhere in the UK.

Performance coatings FAQ

What is the best level of coating for my exhaust?
Our Race-Spec level of coating will offer maximum performance where thermal management is concerned. Cool-Spec will offer maximum longevity and is our hardest wearing coating.
Can you apply a ceramic coating inside an exhaust?
Yes. We can apply a ceramic coating internally to any exhaust which is straight through, or in some cases where only baffles are in place. Our process means we are able to coat every area internally.
Are the coatings engine safe?
Yes. We use coatings specifically designed for engine internals. If they were to fail, they would do so by breaking down and being absorbed into the engine oil. We have not lost an engine in all our years of coating, since 1994.
How long does it take to process?
Our typical lead time is ten days from receipt, depending on the coating specification and product selected. Used components can take a lot longer to strip and prepare than new components, which will affect the lead time.
I have left it until the last minute. Can I get my components processed quicker?
If there is capacity to do so we can fast track to meet deadlines, but there will be a premium of between 30 and 50 per cent depending on the level of urgency and the coating specification required. A reduced lead time would still be in the region of three to five days, because of the processing parameters involved.
Does the MCX coating discolour once it is hot?
If the coating gets close to its temperature limit then some of the shine will be lost, but it will not turn gold or blue as steels do. Basic polishing can bring back some level of shine if this occurs. MCX does not require regular polishing, only a light buff with metal polish periodically.
Can I wrap my coated exhaust?
We do not recommend it. A coated manifold allows a certain level of airflow around the exhaust, which aids cooling and lets the coating flex with each heat cycle. Heat wrap traps moisture against the metal and degrades over time, which can accelerate corrosion underneath.
